Rediscover the Art of Cooking

Cooking together as a family is a wonderful way to get children involved and interested in family meals. Everyone can have a job, regardless of age. To ensure your family cooking time is safe and enjoyable, assign children tasks that are appropriate for their age and skill level. Be sure to supervise cooking activities, especially with younger children.

Getting children involved in the kitchen can be fun. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Wash and dry lettuce. Tear leaves and add to a bowl for salad.
  • Decorate pizza with toppings and sprinkle with cheese.
  • Mix wet and dry ingredients together when making muffins. Place paper liners in the muffin tin or coat with oil using a pastry brush.
  • Crack eggs into a bowl and whisk for scrambled eggs.
  • Add ingredients like frozen fruit, yogurt and milk to a blender for a smoothie.
  • Mash avocado with a potato masher for guacamole.
  • Layer yogurt, berries and oats to make a parfait.
  • Measure out cookie dough using small spoons.
  • Spread butter on bread and add cheese to make a grilled cheese sandwich.
  • Cube cheese or cut soft fruit with a butter knife.
  • Help set the table, portion food on plates and serve to others.

Involving children in meal preparation helps to build food skills, self-confidence and feelings of accomplishment. It may also encourage children to try new foods when they have been involved.

Keep it Fresh

There are many ways to inspire new family meal ideas. Join a cookbook club, scroll favourite recipe sites, sift through a new magazine or ask friends for their favourite go-to recipes. Aim to try one new recipe with your family each week and you may find some new family favourites!
