Golden Cheddar Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (500 mL) all-purpose flour
  • 4 tbsp (20 mL) baking powder
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) sugar
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt
  • 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) shredded Sharp Canadian Cheddar* cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup (250 mL) Milk
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) butter melted
  • Paprika

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 °F (180 °C).

In large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar, mustard and salt; stir in Canadian Cheddar cheese.

In small bowl, lightly beat egg; stir in milk and butter. Add to dry ingredients, all at once, stirring just until moistened. Spread batter into buttered 9 x 5-in (23 x 13 cm) loaf pan. Sprinkle with paprika.

Bake 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pan on wire rack. Remove from pan and let cool completely.

Tips

Stir batter only until dry ingredients are moistened. If overmixed, bread will be tough and uneven.

* Or you can use shredded Canadian Colby or Swiss cheese.
