Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) cinnamon apple butter homemade or store-bought
- 8 slices multigrain bread
- 6 oz (180 g) Canadian firm cheese sliced
- 1 apple thinly sliced
- 8 slices cooked bacon
- Butter at room temperature

- 20 McIntosh apples peeled and coarsely chopped
- 1/4 cup (60 mL) lemon juice
- 1/4 cup (60 mL) maple syrup or sugar
- 1/2 - 1 tsp (2-5 mL) cinnamon

Spread cinnamon apple butter over slices of bread.
Divide cheese, apple and bacon among 4 slices of bread. Top with remaining slices.
Butter outside of sandwiches, and cook in a skillet on medium heat for 4–5 min on each side.
Cut grilled cheese in half and enjoy.
Homemade cinnamon apple butter
In a large saucepan, cook apples with lemon juice on medium-high for about 15 min or until apples are tender.
Using a hand blender, purée apples in the saucepan until smooth. Mix in maple syrup and cinnamon.
Cook on medium heat for 45 more min, stirring occasionally, to concentrate flavours and obtain a buttery texture.
Once cooled, transfer to jars and store in the refrigerator.
Tips
Cooking tip: When cooking a grilled cheese sandwich filled with other ingredients, cover the skillet with a lid or aluminum foil so the centre gets hot without burning the bread.
Cheese alternatives: Canadian Swiss cheese, Gouda, Aged Cheddar.
