Dairy Farmers of Canada supports the Paris Dairy Declaration on Sustainability at 2024 IDF World Dairy Summit

OTTAWA, ON, Oct. 18, 2024 – Today, Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) was proud to endorse the International Dairy Federation’s (IDF) Paris Dairy Declaration on Sustainability, signed as part of the IDF World Dairy Summit in Paris, France, from October 15-18, 2024.

The Declaration was formally signed by IDF and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations with DFC acting as one of the formal supporters, to “reiterate and reinforce our commitments for a sustainable transformation of the dairy sector.” The Declaration recognizes the critical role of dairy in sustainable food systems from socio-economic, environmental and public health perspectives, while calling on the international community to support the wide adoption of sustainable dairy practices that reflect local needs and realities.

DFC President David Wiens was on hand for the signing of the Paris Dairy Declaration on Sustainability. In a speech to the Dairy Leaders’ Forum, he hailed Canadian dairy farmers for the progress they’ve already made, as well as the role that economics play in sustainability. He asserted the need for collaboration amongst the international dairy community in the interest of reaching shared goals.

“Like all dairy farmers around the globe, we are stewards of the land, and the protection of the environment is something that is at the heart of our industry,” said Wiens. “The challenge ahead of us is not small. That is why I am so inspired to see the full value chain committed to collaboration and shared objectives.”

The IDF World Dairy Summit brought representatives from the global dairy community together to discuss how sectors around the world can continue to offer safe, nutritious, and wholesome products while upholding a steadfast commitment to sustainability. DFC representatives were present to make sure the hard work of Canadian dairy farmers was acknowledged as the reason behind our nation’s reputation as a global leader in sustainability.
