Cinnamon Apple Strata (Cooking Club Size)

A family favourite for dessert or special breakfast. For an equally delicious treat, substitute pears for the apples.

Ingredients

  • 3 apples peeled, cored and diced (Crispin, Cortland, Empire or Granny Smith)
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) ground cinnamon
  • 3 tbsp (45 mL) butter
  • 12 slices raisin bread diced
  • 1 cup (250 mL) grated Canadian Cheddar cheese
  • 3 tbsp (45 mL) brown sugar
  • 3 cups (750 mL) Milk
  • 4 eggs

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 ºF (180 ºC). Lightly butter two 8-inch square (20 cm) baking dishes; set aside.

In a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter; add apples and cinnamon; cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5-7 minutes or until apples are just tender.

Divide three quarters of the bread among prepared baking dishes. Dividing equally, layer the ingredients in the following order: apple mixture, cheese, brown sugar and remaining bread.

In a large bowl, whisk milk and eggs together until frothy. Divide among baking dishes. Bake 45 to 60 minutes until set, rotating baking dishes halfway. Serve warm or chilled.
