Overnight Oven Spiced French Toast

Warm spices and Canadian whipped cream add elegance to this French toast served with berries and maple syrup.

Overnight Oven Spiced French Toast

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup (80 mL) Canadian butter, melted and divided
  • 7 eggs
  • 2 cups (500 mL) Canadian milk
  • 1/3 cup (80 mL) granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp (7 mL) vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp (10 mL) ground cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice
  • ¼ tsp (1 mL) salt
  • 1 French loaf or raisin bread loaf, cut into 1-inch (2.5 cm) slices
  • 1 cup (250 mL) Canadian whipped cream, for serving
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) pure maple syrup, for serving
  • 1 cup (250 mL) fresh berries, for serving

Preparation

Brush bottom of 13 x 9-inch (33 x 22 cm) baking dish with 1 tbsp (15 mL) melted butter.

In large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, remaining ¼ cup (60 mL) melted butter, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and salt.

Dip both sides of bread slices in eggs mixture and arrange, overlapping, in baking dish. Pour remaining eggs mixture over slices. Cover and refrigerate 12 hours or overnight.

Preheat oven to 425 °F (220 °C).

Uncover and bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until eggs are set.

Serve with whipped cream, maple syrup and berries.

Tips

During the holiday season, swap 1 cup (250 mL) milk for an equal amount of eggnog, and omit spices.
