Baked Cheddar Strata

Ingredients

  • 8 slices day-old bread
  • Soft butter
  • 2 cups (500 mL) shredded Canadian Cheddar* cheese
  • 5 eggs
  • 3 cups (750 mL) Milk
  • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt
  • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) ground black pepper

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 °F (180 °C).

Trim crusts from bread and butter lightly. Arrange 4 slices in bottom of a buttererd 9-inch (23 cm) square baking dish. Sprinkle half of Canadian Cheddar cheese over bread. Repeat with remaining bread and cheese to form a second layer.

In medium bowl, beat eggs well. Stir in milk, salt and pepper. Pour over bread and cheese. Bake 35 minutes or until knife inserted in centre comes out clean.

Tips

This recipe makes great use of leftover bread. Whole wheat, egg or rye bread work equally well. For a complete meal, spoon diced sautéed vegetables over each serving.

* Or you can use shredded Canadian Colby or Swiss cheese.
