Oma Nellie’s Dutch Vla
No holiday or family gathering is complete without my Oma’s traditional Dutch Vla. Immigrating from the Netherlands to Canada in the early 90s, this is just one of the delicious recipes she brought with her, passed down from her mother, my great Oma. We hope this family favourite brings as much joy to your table as it does to ours. – Deslie, NB

Preparation
In a saucepan set over medium heat, warm milk until hot and bubbles start to form around the edges.
Meanwhile, in a large mixing bowl, whisk together granulated sugar, custard powder and vanilla sugar. Mix well. Whisk in egg yolks and ½ cup (125 mL) hot milk until well incorporated.
When milk starts to boil, transfer half to the egg yolks mixture and stir. Transfer remaining milk and stir until you reach the desired thickness.
Serve over ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream.
Tips
If desired, stir in plain Canadian yogurt to make a thicker Vlaflip.
