- June 1 marks World Milk Day.
- World Milk Day celebrates the hard work of Canada’s dairy farmers in producing milk under some of the world’s highest standards.
June 1 marks World Milk Day. It is an opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and passion that fuel dairy production here in Canada. We can all enjoy fresh milk by the glass and as an ingredient in everyday meals knowing that Canadian milk is delicious, safe, and locally produced.
World Milk Day is the perfect occasion to celebrate what makes the Canadian dairy sector unique. Our dairy farms are often passed down through generations, and farming families are committed to the sustenance of their land and businesses.
For the long run, dairy farmers regularly implement innovative, sustainable practices striving to meet climate change targets and to achieve the net-zero emissions by 2050 commitment. To ensure their stability – and, as such, the security and sovereignty of Canada’s food system as a whole – we have supply management. This way, Canadian farmers get a fair return, and Canadians can access a steady supply of dairy.
Dairy farmers are proud of the work they do to feed Canadian families and contribute to the Canadian economy. Our sector supports over 270,000 full-time equivalent jobs, contributes $28 billion to Canada’s GDP, and generates $9 billion in tax revenue annually. Family dairy farms form the bedrock of many rural communities, a role they have sustained for generations.
This World Milk Day, join me and dairy lovers across the country in honouring the hard work and contributions of Canadian dairy farmers. Raise a glass of high-quality milk in celebration of their contributions to the rural economy, their efforts on climate change mitigation, and the role they play in providing a staple food that benefits all of us.
Cheers!
