Method 1: Melt the butter in a saucepan
This method requires a little patience, but the moderate heat allows the butter to melt evenly and helps prevent splattering.
- Place the butter in a saucepan and heat over very low heat until it gradually melts.
- Stir occasionally to help it melt evenly and prevent it from heating too quickly.
- As soon as the butter is completely melted, lower the heat further or remove the saucepan from the heat before it starts to brown. If butter exceeds 140°C, it can burn and turn black.
Method 2: Melt the butter in the microwave
This is the quickest method and generally requires close attention.
- Cut the butter into small pieces and place them in a microwave-safe container.
- Set the microwave to a low power setting.
- Depending on the amount of butter, 15 to 30 seconds should be enough.
- If it is not completely melted, stir it and return it to the microwave for a short additional interval (about 5 to 10 seconds).
- To prevent the butter from splattering in the microwave, cover the container with a sheet of damp paper towel. It should not be dripping wet, as excess water coming into contact with the fat may cause splattering.
Method 3: Melt the butter in the oven
An effective method for baking.
While the oven is preheating, place the butter in a baking dish and melt it in the oven for about 2 minutes. Remove it from the oven and carefully spread the melted butter around the edges of the dish, being careful not to spill it on yourself.
