Method 1: Melt the butter in a saucepan

This method requires a little patience, but the moderate heat allows the butter to melt evenly and helps prevent splattering.

  1. Place the butter in a saucepan and heat over very low heat until it gradually melts.
  2. Stir occasionally to help it melt evenly and prevent it from heating too quickly.
  3. As soon as the butter is completely melted, lower the heat further or remove the saucepan from the heat before it starts to brown. If butter exceeds 140°C, it can burn and turn black.

Method 2: Melt the butter in the microwave

This is the quickest method and generally requires close attention.

  1. Cut the butter into small pieces and place them in a microwave-safe container.
  2. Set the microwave to a low power setting.
  3. Depending on the amount of butter, 15 to 30 seconds should be enough.
  4. If it is not completely melted, stir it and return it to the microwave for a short additional interval (about 5 to 10 seconds).
  5. To prevent the butter from splattering in the microwave, cover the container with a sheet of damp paper towel. It should not be dripping wet, as excess water coming into contact with the fat may cause splattering.

Method 3: Melt the butter in the oven

An effective method for baking.

While the oven is preheating, place the butter in a baking dish and melt it in the oven for about 2 minutes. Remove it from the oven and carefully spread the melted butter around the edges of the dish, being careful not to spill it on yourself.
